Symptoms of diabetes may come on slowly, especially in type II diabetes, and can go unnoticed.

Type II Diabetes Treatment

Type II diabetes is a chronic disease that does not yet have a known cure. The main goals of diabetes treatment and management involve reducing the mortality of the disease, and preserving the quality of the patient's life. Type II diabetes management is accomplished through diet adjustments, exercise, and weight loss (especially in obese patients).

A diabetic's condition of health may be kept better by closely controlling blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and lipids. Doing so may help to minimize the long-term consequences related to type II diabetes. Dietary management is a major part of diabetes treatment.

Commonly recommended blood glucose targets are:

Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c): 6.0% to 7.0%
Preprandial blood glucose: 4.0 to 6.0 mmol/L
2-hour postprandial blood glucose: 5.0 to 8.0 mmol/L

Advice from a doctor or medical professional is what you should base your treatment options, goals, and recommended blood glucose levels upon. Information in this article is not a suitable replacement for professional medical advice.
