Did You Know?

Diabetes of all types affects over 150 million people worldwide.

Type II diabetes prevents the body's insulin from working properly in metabolism to turn food into energy.

Symptoms of diabetes may come on slowly, especially in type II diabetes, and can go unnoticed.

Type II Diabetes Symptoms

The classic three type II diabetes symptoms are: polyuria (frequent urination), polydipsia (increased thirst, leading to possible dehydration and increased fluid intake) and polyphagia (increased appetite). With type II diabetes, these symptoms generally progress slowly, and may be unnoticeable for a while. They are related to elevated blood sugar levels.

The inability of a diabetic's insulin to work as it should affects the metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Under normal circumstances, insulin aids in the storage of protein and fat, as an anabolic hormone. Therefore, an insulin deficiency may finally lead to weight loss, even though the patient may have an increase in appetite.

Type II diabetes also leaves the individual more vulnerable to bladder infections, skin infections and vaginal infections. Blurred vision may result from the changes in blood glucose levels. Untreated type II diabetes may bring on fatigue, nausea and vomiting. If elevated blood glucose levels become extreme, lethargy and coma may occur.

Symptoms alone are not reason to believe that one does have type II diabetes, nor does a lack of symptoms imply that one does not suffer from this condition. A diabetes test done by a medical professional is the preferable way of determining whether you or a loved one does have type II diabetes.
