Did You Know?

Diabetes of all types affects over 150 million people worldwide.

Type II diabetes prevents the body's insulin from working properly in metabolism to turn food into energy.

Symptoms of diabetes may come on slowly, especially in type II diabetes, and can go unnoticed.

Type II Diabetes Information

Type II diabetes is a chronic disease. Together with type I diabetes and gestational diabetes, over 150 million people worldwide are affected by diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has called the increase in diabetes an epidemic.

People with type II diabetes do produce insulin, which separates them from those with type I diabetes. Simply put, the insulin is either insufficient, or the body does not recognize or use it properly. This prevents the patient's body from turning food into energy (through metabolism). The glucose (sugar) then remains in the bloodstream, bringing complications.

Some common early symptoms of diabetes include: frequent urination, increased thirst, dehydration, increased fluid intake and increased appetite. Symptoms may come on slowly and even not be noticed at all. A lack of symptoms does not mean that a person does not have type II diabetes, nor does any specific symptom mean that diabetes is the cause. Seek professional medical advice for a proper diagnosis.

Type II diabetes may be treated through means such as diet, exercise and weight loss.
