Did You Know?

Diabetes of all types affects over 150 million people worldwide.

Type II diabetes prevents the body's insulin from working properly in metabolism to turn food into energy.

Symptoms of diabetes may come on slowly, especially in type II diabetes, and can go unnoticed.

Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes is a metabolic disorder which is characterized mainly by insulin resistence, a relative deficiency of insulin, and hyperglycemia. In many cases it may be managed through exercise and modifications in diet.

Cases of type II diabetes are rapidly increasing in the developed world. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has labeled this as an epidemic. Although type II diabetes had in times past been primarily seen in adults above the age of 40, the disease is now being seen frequently in children.

Type II diabetes is different than type I diabetes in that there is less tendency toward ketoacidosis. A different situation which can occur in type II diabetes is nonketotic hyperglycemia, which results in very high glucose levels and may lead to nonketotic hyperglycemic coma.

Type II diabetes is also known as type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus type 2. It was formerly known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), and adult-onset diabetes.
